The EU is currently working on a law that in future the use of unit seed requires farmers and gardeners. Old and rare varieties will then have little chance of approval. This mainly affects old fruit and vegetables - their cultivation should in future be punishable, even if it is in private gardens.
With the new regulation, a decision of the European Court to be legalized by July 2012, are allowed to sell only officially certified seed by farmers. Old and rare seed varieties that were grown in long-standing exchange economy and mostly traded in only small amounts were previously exempt. To the future, however - it goes to the Commission's plans - even small-scale farmers and private individuals operating their own bred seeds may not even give away without incurring a penalty. A fatal development, which would mean a further limitation of both the species and food diversity and the small-scale agriculture. (Source: German Economic News 21/04/2013)
